California hates you, your guns and your 2nd Amendment rights – that much is for certain. The state legislature passed a series of bills dubbed SV 53, or the “LIFE” Act, because these people love giving cutsey names to liberty-stripping bills that lower public rage against them. Included in that series of bills are mandatory $50 “Ammo permit fees” as well as background checks. Oh, and we who live in CA (both Marc and I reside in Los Angeles) can no longer purchase ammo online, should we be so inclined, and should there be any available that the DHS hasn’t bought up. Every purchase must be in person, in front of a state licensed dealer.
Critics in the CA Senate correctly assessed that this bill will have zero impact on criminals, who don’t go through traditional means to get ammo or weapons, and will only serve to hurt law-abiding citizens. From CNS:
“SB 53 will do nothing to stop criminals from purchasing ammunition,” said Sen. Tom Berryhill. “These restrictions – like most of the gun legislation we are seeing here today – won’t do a thing to stop crime. They will only hurt the law abiding citizens like hunters and sportsmen who, for the record, contribute millions to the state’s economy.”
Even one Democrat voted against SB 53: Sen. Rod Wright (D) said requiring permits to buy ammunition “only inhibits law-abiding citizens from exercising their 2nd Amendment rights. It shouldn’t be in law. It’s not going to stand up in court,” he added.
There will undoubtedly be challenges in court, which the state will lose. I tell you…it’s a very hard trade off living here. The weather is nice, but the “climate” is miserable.
