70 years ago today, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, launching America full-fledged into World War II. We’ve been taught that this was a “sneak attack” and forced our peace-loving government to reluctantly enter the war. But as is so often the case, the truth always tends to come out over time. It is now public knowledge that, at a a minimum, Franklin Roosevelt had prior knowledge of this event, thanks to documents released by Freedom of Information Act Requests. Governments
We pride ourselves on our original content here at Lions of Liberty. But sometimes someone does so great a job breaking down an issue that it’s better just to pass the baton. Glenn Greenwald of Salon.com has done an excellent analysis of S. 1867 and exactly what it means in expanding the definition of the “War on Terror” as well as the military’s power to detain “suspected” terrorists, up to and including U.S. Citizens. The biggest point that Greenwald makes
The following 61 Senators betrayed you and every other American citizen today by voting against the Udall Amendment, which would strike the provision of the National Defense Autorhization Act which allows for indefinite detention of American citizens by the military Below is the list of Senators who history will remember as amongst those who furthered us down the past of tyranny. Are any of them your Senator? Let them know what you think. Be careful though, speaking out might be
There is a bill currently in the Senate that every American should be extremely concerned about. The National Defense Authorization Act includes Section 1301, which states: “Congress affirms that the authority of the President to use all necessary and appropriate force…includes the authority for the Armed Forces of the United States to detain covered persons…Detention under the law of war without trial”. This clearly gives the power to the President and the military to detain anyone it chooses without trial.
Using a tactic that the US has perfected to disarm and placate its citizens through wordplay, Egypt has renamed its secret police force to “Homeland Security.” Doesn’t that sound all nice and fuzzy? Just like our own incredibly intrusive, liberty & Bill of Rights ignoring “Homeland Security!” This should serve as a wakeup call, that a military dictatorship is ripping a page straight from our so called “free” nation to continue to oppress its citizens. As supporters of liberty on every level, I feel it’s our duty to point out what is happening with SOPA, the “Stop Online Piracy” Act. This act will give unprecedented powers to the government to seize any website for “piracy”, the definition of which is quite vague and quite subjective. I encourage anyone regardless of political or philosophical beliefs to look further into this act and the implications it could have on freedom of speech for all of us. With
We have made only slight mention of it because we feel the media has given in quite enough attention and it doesn’t really apply to the theme of the blog but the Penn State scandal, as adequately pointed out in this editorial from a Penn State senior, provides an example of something that does apply. National Media Misses the Mark The media storm of the scandal has highlighted 2 major issues that are central to the philosophy here at Lions
Today marks the momentous occasion of the Department of Homeland Security taking over TVs in Marriotts, Hiltons, Sheratons, Holiday Inns and other hotels all over the USA. Yes, our uberalles DHS is now running 15 second messages on the home-screen of Hotel TVs urging travelers to report that guy in the hotel bar or a particularly suspicious maid. “Maybe you see something suspicious. Can you be sure? If you see something, say something to authorities.”(excerpt) Naturally, one thinks of the
