Recent chatter on social media has claimed that Jay Z and Beyoncé have been secretly contributing to funds that have paid bail for “protesters” arrested during the Ferguson and Baltimore protests.
Author Dream Hamptom, who has worked with Jay Z in the past, claimed Sunday on Twitter that, in addition to their public matching of donations to the “Baltimore Justice Fund”, the power couple has been covertly sending money to bail out protesters in Baltimore and Ferguson.
On the surface this seems like a noble cause to pursue, but what if some of the individuals they assisted with bail have harmed other individuals or destroyed property? What if they were released on bail only to destroy more property and cause more havoc? What kind of message does that send?
Jay Z and Beyoncé bankrolled protesters in Baltimore and Ferguson with tens of thousands of dollars in bail money, a writer and social activist close to him claimed. “I can say I’ve personally helped facilitate donations they’ve given to protesters directly and that they never ask for anything in return, especially publicity,” author dream hampton told the Daily News in an email. The writer, who collaborated on Jay Z’s book “Decoded,” first revealed the power couple’s behind-the-scenes support in a series of tweets on Sunday morning. “When we needed money for bail for Baltimore protesters, I asked hit Jay up, as I had for Ferguson, wired tens of thousands in mins.” hampton wrote.
It’s one thing to pay for the bail of a person who was arrested exercising their First Amendment rights while protesting against police brutality. However, if Jay Z and Queen B are not vetting cases carefully prior to distributing bail money, then it would be easy for bail money to be funneled to violent rioters who have destroyed property and potentially harmed individuals. This could be an unintended consequence of this otherwise seemingly noble cause.
Reporters should be hounding Jay Z and Beyoncé and asking what procedure or policies they have in place to vet those “protesters” who meet the criteria to receive bail money or other legal assistance.
Surely, some protesters are facing charges that are trumped-up or possibly outright fabricated. In these instances it is decent and honorable to assist with their legal defense. However, a lot of these cases are complicated and many of the “protesters” arrested in Baltimore and Ferguson were charged with legitimate crimes for damaging property or harming individuals. What is the justification for bailing out these criminals?
What message is Jay Z sending by swooping in to bailout these rioters and put them back on the street to inflict more property damage and cause more havoc?
This isn’t to say that Jay Z or Beyoncé are purposely bailing out violent criminals so they can continue to perpetrate violence. But I am raising the warning flag to ask why the mainstream media is not addressing this angle of the story.
Jay Z and Beyoncé are pop culture figures that heavily influence a huge demographic in this country. It should be headline news that they could possibly be covertly perpetuating violence, perhaps unintentionally, by bailing out individuals who have committed violent acts. They are doing so while claiming to protect free speech, but if their seemingly noble act is perpetuating violence, then they should be publicly chided for this irresponsible behavior.
