Bloomberg's "Constitution Interpretation" Comments An Exercise In Irony

NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg's most recent freedom-hating comments concerning interpretation of the Constitution in the wake of the Boston Bombings would drive any liberty-minded person to anger...if they weren't so ridiculously and comically ironic. Nothing that can be said or done by Bloomberg at this point would be shocking. The man has made New York City into a virtual police state, even without his most recent attack on large beverages. But the depth of the man's lack of perspective on liberty, law and how his own actions impact freedom can't help but raise an eyebrow.Yesterday Bloomberg was quoted saying:

“The people who are worried about privacy have a legitimate worry...But we live in a complex word where you’re going to have to have a level of security greater than you did back in the olden days, if you will. And our laws and our interpretation of the Constitution, I think, have to change.”Look, we live in a very dangerous world. We know there are people who want to take away our freedoms. New Yorkers probably know that as much if not more than anybody else after the terrible tragedy of 9/11.

There is irony #1, as in the wake of 9/11 under the Patriot Act, Americans had their freedoms stripped away in droves by our own government, most notably the right to privacy and protection from search and seizure without warrant, plus right to trial. Of course, a further, if happier irony, is that despite the Patriot Act allowing the arrest and detainment of people considered "enemy combatants" without trial, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev will be tried in civilian court for his suspected actions in Boston.

We have to understand that in the world going forward, we’re going to have more cameras and that kind of stuff. That’s good in some sense, but it’s different from what we are used to.It really says something bad about us that we have to do it. But our obligation first and foremost is to keep our kids safe in the schools; first and foremost, to keep you safe if you go to a sporting event; first and foremost is to keep you safe if you walk down the streets or go into our parks,” he said. “We cannot let the terrorists put us in a situation where we can’t do those things. And the ways to do that is to provide what we think is an appropriate level of protection.”

Yes, it's terrible if terrorists can attack us at sporting events, and reasonable measures should be considered that don't infringe on the rights of every person attending that event, or more-so, those who aren't attending that event, but may live in the area or walk by. New York is already looking to implement Terahertz Imaging Technology (T-Ray) in the city that will either sit on a stationary corner, or be mounted in a van to be used on unwilling and unwitting citizens, scanning them for guns, knives, etc without their knowledge and without a warrant. Plus, New York's "Stop and Frisk" policy already pushes the boundaries of legality (basically it is illegal and unconstitutional) and targets minority groups in particular, and that isn't even centered around any particular event.

What we can't do is let the protection get in the way of us enjoying our freedoms... You still want to let people practice their religion, no matter what that religion is. And I think one of the great dangers here is going and categorizing anybody from one religion as a terrorist. That’s not true … That would let the terrorists win. That’s what they want us to do.

Again..ridiculous. New York has already come under fire for spying on and infringing on the rights of certain religions (namely Muslims), so Bloomberg is putting his foot in this mouth again on that one. Then to say that the "terrorists win" if we don't re-examine the Constitution in order to allow more liberty-infringing practices by our government? Who else's sides hurt from laughing so hard?If the terrorists goal is to attack American and its freedom - though typically I am in the camp believing they attack us because of our constant meddling in foreign affairs - then the way in which they win is by stripping away the "American Way of Life." That means freedom from this exact kind of big brother tyranny. Most Islam-inspired governments are all about control - control by the church or State over everything the population does.Bloomberg and his ilk desire to exchange one type of fear for another through these actions, and I for one fear the government's increasing stranglehold on the population far more than I fear terrorists. Every right that is stripped away under the guise of "protecting us" is one more victory for the terrorists that attack us.Receive access to ALL of our EXCLUSIVE bonus audio content – including “Conspiracy Corner”, “Degenerate Gamblers” and the “League of Liberty Podcast” by joining the Lions of Liberty Pride and supporting us on Patreon!
