Should You Care About A Government Shutdown?
October 1st is the looming date that all of the political pundits and politicians have their hackles raised about, when the government's authority to fund (i.e. the budget) expires. The public is led to believe that this would result in utter anarchy (and not the good An-Cap kind that some of our libertarian brethren love) with all society screeching to a halt and America left defenseless and in stasis. The reality of course is that barely any government programs are actually touched by a "shutdown" because most are considered "essential."The military, FBI, TSA, DEA, NSA, Air Traffic Control, Firefighters, etc., all stay open as they protect life and property (under An Cap some of these would stay open regardless as privately owned services...). Social Security, Medicare, etc., etc., all stay open as as well as they are largely automated, and others like the Post Office stay open because they draw budget from outside sources on top of the government budget (which they overshoot by billions each year). So despite all of the hand-wringing, almost nothing will change should this shutdown occur. Parks will close, NASA will have to take a break, you won't be able to process your passport (maybe).Really, unless you are in a very tiny portion of the populace, a shutdown wouldn't affect you in any way, whatsoever. So, should you care about it? Only because of the political machinations going on that are tied into passing a new budget. Let me assure you that a government shutdown won't happen. Or if it does it will last all of 48 hours. Unlike in the past, there are virtually no principled politicians that would actually stand up to stop the budget from passing, despite our massive debt and the U.S. being over the debt ceiling by what is approaching a trillion dollars already for the fiscal year. But because both sides are so compliant and reliant on this bloated governmental blob, there is room for the GOP to try to force some change.
House GOP leaders Wednesday announced that they will move quickly to raise the government's borrowing cap by attaching a wish list of GOP priorities like blocking "Obamacare," forcing construction of the Keystone XL pipeline and setting the stage for reforming the loophole-cluttered tax code. They also, as expected, promised tea party lawmakers a chance to first use a routine temporary government funding bill to try to muscle the Democratic-controlled Senate into derailing President Barack Obama's health care law.
You can read more on that here, and be sure to enjoy this passage as well:
Speaking to CEOs of the Business Roundtable Wednesday, Obama called on the corporate leaders to use their influence to avoid a potentially damaging showdown over the debt ceiling.
Adorable! I always enjoy the liberal man's boy toy sidling up to big business and begging for aid. Especially when Obama, who has decried the lobbyists in DC and vowed to cut ties with them, is asking big biz to use those same lobbyists to help him now. Don't look now, Barack, but your hypocrisy is showing.Getting back to the shutdown...at the end of the day I root for it to happen, and to somehow extend long enough that people conclude that many government services aren't needed or are better off handled by the private sector. People don't realize what they don't really need or how much better something can be until they are deprived of it, or exposed to a better system. Naturally, government is set up to stop that at all costs - people are reliant on government, and government wants them to be, all the while maintaining its monopoly on violence that curtails competition from the private sector on many services. But we can always hope that eventually the current cycle will be broken.Receive access to ALL of our EXCLUSIVE bonus audio content – including “Conspiracy Corner”, “Degenerate Gamblers” and the “League of Liberty Podcast” by joining the Lions of Liberty Pride and supporting us on Patreon!
