The United States has by the far the most people held in penal institution out of any country in the world. This is ironic considering that the US claims to be the land of the free.According to Drugwarfact.org, “More than 10.2 million people are held in penal institutions throughout the world, mostly as pre-trial detainees/remand prisoners or as sentenced prisoners. Almost half of these are in the United States (2.24M), Russia (0.68M) or China (1.64M).” We further explored this topic in a previous article, which focused on mandatory sentence for victim-less crimes.The United States has become a society with too many laws and too many authorities eager to enforce the laws. This has led to a frightening trend in the number of young Americans arrested, especially African American and Hispanic males.By the time US males reach twenty-three-years old, forty nine percent of blacks, forty four percent of Hispanics, and thirty eight percent of whites had been arrested for something other than a minor traffic violation. Reuters reported these numbers from a new study released this week that was published in the journal Crime & Delinquency.Arrest numbers for females was about the same for black, Hispanic, and white. They were much lower than the amount of males arrested by age twenty-three.The team that released this study began researching in 2010. They determined what fraction of the U.S. population has been arrested, using national survey data from 1997-2008 found in the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Last year, the researchers reported that one-third of Americans had been arrested by age 23.These high arrest numbers could mean one of two things. Either the younger generation is composed of a significant number of degenerates, or young people are getting arrested for minor incidents that would have been handled informally in previous generations. My gut tells me the latter is more in line with reality.Society has changed drastically over the last ten or twenty years. Police have infiltrated the public school system as parents and administrators have looked for ways to protect students left vulnerable by gun-free zones. This has caused a lot of kids to be arrested in and around school property for minor offenses. In a previous installment of Felony Friday we reported on a student being charged with a felony for leaving his fishing knife in his car while parked on school property. The charges were later dropped, but the boy’s car should not have been searched in the first place.An arrest on an individual’s record can have detrimental effects that last a lifetime. A criminal record can make it harder to get a job or secure a loan. Exposing an impressionable youth to unsavory characters in prison could serve as the gateway to a life of crime.The young generations are the future.
