The Morning Roar: CA's New "Gun Violence Restraining Order," Edward Snowden's NBC Interview, and is Obama Trying to Take Down Rand Paul?
Hello Campers, and welcome to the Friday Morning Roar!California's New "Gun Violence Restraining Order" Lets Cops Seize & Prohibit Purchases of GunsIn response to the Santa Barbara shootings, the (Democratic) lawmakers have put forth a new over-reactionary bill which carries the intent of making it easier to ban people from owning or buying guns. They've taken to calling it a "gun violence restraining order," which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, but I guess catchy rules in modern day America. It got Obama elected after all.
The bill would establish a system in which concerned relatives, intimate partners or friends can notify police about someone showing a propensity toward violence, so police can investigate and seek a judge's order to seize that person's firearms and prevent any purchases.Current law lets that process start only when therapists notify police that a client is at risk of committing a violent act. Family members can call police, but if no crime has been committed and the individual doesn't meet criteria for an involuntary civil commitment to mental health treatment, there isn't anything police can do about that person's firearms.
And how would the police go about investigating these reports from concerned parties? A knock on the door to ask if they plan on murdering anyone? Doubtful. Most likely if someone reports a friend, lover or family member (and naturally this would never be abused for personal gain, out of malice or vengeance) the police will immediately attempt to obtain the judge's order and take away the subject's guns and rights. I would venture to guess that this would be a "guilty until proven innocent" situation, which would require hundreds of hours of very expensive therapy to rectify, and even then, there is no guarantee. Highly troubling. If you want to know who's behind this absurd legislation, it's Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, Assemblyman Das Williams, D-Santa Barbara, and state Sen. Hannah Beth Jackson, D-Santa Barbara.Edward Snowden Full NBC InterviewJust because I presume a lot of people would be interested in watching it, the full interview between Snowden and Brian Williams is below. Within the interview Snowden reveals that he considers himself a patriot (as do we here at Lions of Liberty) who acted against the State in order to right the massive violations of the Constitution by the U.S. government. Give it a watch:Obama's Latest Speech At West Point Seems To Target Rand Paul Chris Cilliza over at the Washington Post has an interesting take on President Obama's most recent speech, delivered Wednesday at West Point. I'll include one excerpt here, but it's worth clicking through and giving the whole article a read. After review, it certainly seems as though Obama is speaking directly about Rand's actions and stances, which means that the man is afraid of him enough to take action. Verbal action anyway, though if I were Rand, I would have my security on drone watch 24/7.From the W.Post:
*Obama: "Remember that because of America’s efforts – through diplomacy and foreign assistance, as well as the sacrifices of our military – more people live under elected governments today than any time in human history....In Egypt, we acknowledge that our relationship is anchored in security interests – from the peace treaty with Israel, to shared efforts against violent extremism. So we have not cut off cooperation with the new government. But we can and will persistently press for the reforms that the Egyptian people have demanded."Paul conducted a high-profile attempt to cut $1.5 billion in U.S. aid to Egypt and redirect it to American infrastructure improvements last summer. While Paul's amendment -- he was trying to add it to a transportation bill -- was tabled, he did get the votes of 12 other Senators including tea party favorites liked Mike Lee (Utah) and Ted Cruz (Texas). “All I can see is the billions of American tax dollars that he chooses to send overseas,” Paul said of President Obama in a speech on the Senate floor before the vote. “The president sends billions of dollars to Egypt in the form of advanced fighter plans and tanks while Detroit crumbles. In our hour of need in our country, why are you sending money to people that hate us?" Paul has also been outspoken on U.S. aid to Israel, calling it "welfare to a wealthy nation" in 2011.
I would actually pay good money to see a direct Obama-Rand Paul debate. I doubt it will ever happen, but a boy can dream, can't he? A boy can dream.
