The Morning Roar: NYPD Searching Beach Coolers, Militarism Of Police Departments Continues, Citizen With A Concealed Carry Permit Tried To Stop Las Vegas Murders

Welcome to The Morning Roar for Tuesday, June 9, 2014!NYPD Searching Beach CoolersThere’s nothing quite like sipping on an ice-cold beer while relaxing on the beach on a hot day. But if you plan on enjoying a refreshing brew on a NYC beach this summer, then you better take extra precautions to be clandestine in your consumption of an adult beverage. The Gothamist says that local residents are reporting the police have escalated their enforcement of open container laws and are searching individuals’ coolers on the beach. If you do get approached by the boys in blue on a NYC beach - or any beach - this summer, don’t panic. Just because the police have asked for permission to search your belongings does not mean that you must consent to a search. The New York Civil Liberties Union has put together a palm card, which can be downloaded to your phone. It spells out your rights in the unfortunate event you are stopped by police. The palm card is specific to New York, but the NYCLU website also has a list of what to do if you’re stopped by the police. This list could aid with making interactions with police go smoothly anywhere. Follow these guidelines if you ever find yourself being questioned by police:

  • Stay calm and in control of your words, body language and emotions.
  • Don’t get into an argument with the police.
  • Never bad-mouth a police officer.
  • Remember, anything you say or do can be used against you.
  • Keep your hands where the police can see them.
  • Don’t run.
  • Don’t touch any police officer.
  • Don’t resist even if you believe you are innocent.
  • If you complain at the scene, or tell the police they’re wrong, do so in a non-confrontational way that will not intensify the scene.
  • Do not make any statements regarding the incident.
  • If you are arrested, ask for a lawyer immediately.
  • Remember officers’ badge numbers, patrol car numbers and physical descriptions.
  • Write down everything you remember ASAP.
  • Try to find witnesses and their names and phone numbers.
  • If you are injured, take photos of the injuries as soon as possible, but make sure you get medical attention first. Ask for copies of your medical treatment files.

Militarism Of Police Departments ContinuesSmall towns across the country are loading up on military equipment as the U.S. government’s active wars abroad are winding down. As more military surplus tools of combat flow into state and local law enforcement agencies across the country, the line between a police officer and a soldier is becoming blurred.Local communities are pushing back against the acquisition of unnecessary military equipment by their local police departments. Some police departments have acquiesced to the concerns of their community and declined the war gear, but many others have stocked up and have supplied some pretty bizarre justifications for acquiring the gear. The New York Times reports that the increase in military gear has not only changed the appearance of local police forces, but has also altered how officers view themselves.

The ubiquity of SWAT teams has changed not only the way officers look, but also the way departments view themselves. Recruiting videos feature clips of officers  storming into homes with smoke grenades and  firing automatic weapons. In Springdale, Ark.,  a police recruiting video is dominated by SWAT clips, including officers throwing a flash grenade into a house and creeping through a field in camouflage.

In South Carolina, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department’s website features its SWAT team, dressed in black with guns drawn, flanking an armored vehicle that looks like a tank and has a mounted .50-caliber gun. Capt. Chris Cowan, a department spokesman, said the vehicle “allows the department to stay in step with the criminals who are arming themselves more heavily every day.” He said police officers had taken it to schools and community events, where it was a conversation starter.

“All of a sudden, we start relationships with people,” he said.

Not everyone agrees that there is a need for such vehicles. Ronald E. Teachman, the police chief in South Bend, Ind., said he decided not to request a mine-resistant vehicle for his city. "I go to schools,” he said. “But I bring ‘Green Eggs and Ham.’ ”

I learned something today; apparently tanks are great conversation starters. If starting conversations is part of the justification for your police department to acquire a tank, then your police department doesn’t need a tank. Hopefully most of those conversations are starting something like this, “Hey Captain, why the heck do you need a tank?”Citizen With A Concealed Carry Permit Tried To Stop Las Vegas MurdersMost of the reports on Monday regarding the murder of two police officers and a citizen in Las Vegas have centered on the political beliefs of the husband and wife perpetrators that allegedly committed the evil acts. Videos and posts on social media sites have surfaced that are attributed to the male, Jarad Miller. In the videos he spouts anti-government views and he foreshadows the shooting in a Facebook rant. The media has given very little coverage to the man Amanda Miller gunned down in a Las Vegas Walmart. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports on Joseph Robert Wilcox’s heroic acts to try to stop the psychopathic killers.

After executing two Las Vegas police officers at a CiCi’s pizza, Jerad Miller entered a nearby Wal-Mart, at Nellis Boulevard and Stewart Avenue, fired a round in the air and ordered everyone to leave, setting off a panic. It was at that point, instead of running, Wilcox approached Jerad Miller from behind.Law enforcement sources said Wilcox, who had a concealed weapons permit and carried a handgun, was ready to “end it” when Amanda Miller, who was behind Wilcox, shot and killed him.Wilcox’s family has been devastated by what happened, his uncle John Wilson said Monday.“He wasn’t political,” Wilson said. “But he definitely believed in the right to bear arms and the right to defend yourself and others.”

Joseph Robert Wilcox put his life on the line while attempting to save others. He deserves to go down in history as a hero. This law-abiding citizen with a concealed carry permit was almost able to take Jarad Miller out. Unfortunately, Wilcox did not know there were two shooters and Amanda Miller was able to come up from behind and kill him.Why has the media been mostly silent about Mr. Wilcox? The media knows that more pageviews are generated by reporting on the “right wing” views of the killers. In pursuing this narrative the media is neglecting to recognize the actions of a true hero. Plus it gives the media an opportunity to smear those that believe in liberty by lumping liberty lovers in with two sick and twisted lunatics.Jarad and Amanda Miller might have claimed to believe in liberty and the golden rule, but their actions prove they did not live by them. Their actions proved that they are psychopathic killers. An excerpt from William Grigg's post on the LewRockwell.com  does a fine job of explaining why lunatics that mimic state violence will never succeed in carrying out a genuine "revolution."

No genuine “revolution” can be carried out through aggressive violence, or led by people who mimic the worst behavior of those who act in the name of the murderous fiction called the State. This approach is morally abhorrent and strategically suicidal. The state subsists on aggression: We should be starving the beast, rather than feeding it.

The principles of liberty are entirely opposed to aggressive violence. A libertarian revolution cannot be a violent revolution.Read The Morning Roar every weekday Monday-Friday!The Lions of Liberty are on TwitterFacebook & Google+Receive access to ALL of our EXCLUSIVE bonus audio content – including “Conspiracy Corner”, “Degenerate Gamblers” and the “League of Liberty Podcast” by joining the Lions of Liberty Pride and supporting us on Patreon!
