Felony Friday: Father Calls Cops On Son For Giving Cannabis Oil To Grandpa
This sounds like a family that doesn’t put the fun in dysfunctional.In July of this year, J. Michael Robbins of Downers Grove, Illinois petitioned for an order of protection in DuPage County on behalf of his father, Joseph Robbins. The petition was filed to protect his father from his own grandson, David M. Robbins. David also happens to be J. Michael Robbins’ son.Why on earth would anyone call the cops on their own son? Surely, he must have done something terrible.Think again.The father petitioned for protection after he discovered that his son was giving his grandfather cannabis oil four times a day, in an attempt to help his grandfather’s prostate cancer. Many young people don’t even visit their grandparents as their lives fill up with distractions, but it appears that David Robbins was not only visiting, but trying to help his grandfather. It is apparent that J. Michael Robbins did not see it as help.J. Michael Robbins followed up the first petition for protection with a second. This time the petition was to protect himself and his wife from their son, because he was allegedly sending harassing text messages.I wonder why the son would be sending harassing text messages? Maybe it had something to do with the father petitioning for an order of protection, resulting in David Robbins no longer being able to see his grandfather. Additionally, the order for protection resulted in the loss of David Robbins’ Second Amendment rights. I think David had very good reason to be upset with his father.The first protective order, to protect Joseph Robbins, gave police the green light to execute a search warrant on David Robbins’ home, because he had not complied with the order by turning over his firearms.The search on David Robbins’ property would land him in jail. He was charged with manufacturing more than 5,000 grams of marijuana, a Class X felony; possession of more than 5,000 grams of marijuana, a Class 1 felony; production of more than 200 marijuana plants, a Class 1 felony; and violation of an order of protection, a Class A misdemeanor. In addition, two handguns and a rifle were confiscated from his home.As of publishing time, David Robbins is still locked up in the Kane County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bond.This entire incident started because a grandson was giving his grandfather cannabis oil. There are numerous claims of cannabis used as a treatment to cure cancer, but at this point not enough research has been done. It is unknown if the cannabis oil was requested by the grandfather and unfortunately may never be known because Joseph Robbins passed away in September at the age of ninety-two.If Joseph Rollins did not consent to being administered cannabis oil, then the grandson is morally at fault for forcing it on his grandfather. If he did consent, then the grandson did nothing morally wrong. He did break the law and knowingly took a risk, but perhaps if marijuana was legal or decriminalized in Illinois a father would not have ruined his son’s life.
