Overcoming Adversity and Changing the System from the Inside with Michael Monsivais
Today on Felony Friday Michael Monsivias joins John to talk about his experience in the criminal justice system and how he's using his own experience to create better opportunities other prisoners. Michael also details one of his worst days in prison, when prison guards threw flash grenades into his cell unprovoked. Two of them exploded, burning his flesh. Instead of getting medical assistance, he was thrown into solitary, likely to hide his injuries from investigators.Michael grew up in an environment where he was surrounded by drugs. He grew up in a tough neighborhood and spent time in and out of jail on various arrests. In an effort to turn his life around, he found a mentor who introduced him to welding and within a year he was in a union working on various building projects as the economy boomed through 2007. When the economy crashed and he lost his job, he turned back to selling drugs, which led to another arrest and a 130 month sentence. While in prison, turned worked with prison administrators to create and teach a welding program that gives inmates the skills they need to land gainful employment upon release.Discussed on the show:
