Chris Christie Is A Sad, Misguided Man

There is a war of words being fought between NJ Governor Chris Christie and Rand Paul right now over blatantly ignorant and misguided statements from Christie, who very recently said that libertarianism is "dangerous." Christie follows the farcical political playbook to a "T" as he tries to break down libertarian thinking concerning personal liberty vs. the War on Terror with his rhetoric. I'll provide the exact quotes, along with my thoughts after each:

“This strain of libertarianism that’s going through parties right now and making big headlines I think is a very dangerous thought,”

Naturally, anything that challenges the status quo is "dangerous" to the existing big government, big brother regime. The first tactic of those in government is always to try to scare the public into getting in line and following along like sheep. Danger, Will Robinson!

“These esoteric, intellectual debates — I want them to come to New Jersey and sit across from the widows and the orphans and have that conversation. And they won’t, because that’s a much tougher conversation to have,” Christie said.

That's number 2 - liberals especially fall back on this one: the use of children, or victims as a shield. God forbid we have an "intellectual debate" on this!!There is rightful indignation when  terrorist organizations use human shields in warfare, yet in political warfare, these politicians unscrupulously throw these cases in front of whatever they are trying to push through, knowing that it makes assaulting the factual basis far more difficult. "Don't you care about orphans? You monster!" It's a pathetic political ploy to attach an emotional trigger to an issue that has nothing to do with the base argument.

“The next attack that comes, that kills thousands of Americans as a result, people are going to be looking back on the people having this intellectual debate and wondering whether they put …” Christie said before trailing off.

Again, everyone must be super-afraid of the terrorist attack that will kill thousands. We must all sacrifice our liberty, our privacy and our anonymity - all 300+ million Americans, so that we can maybe defuse a very slight chance of another large-scale attack. Nevermind changing our foreign policy that causes terrorist creation and a culture of anti-Americanism. No, just give away all your rights instead.

“President Obama has done nothing to change the policies of the Bush administration in the war on terrorism. And I mean practically nothing,” he said. “And you know why? Cause they work.”

They didn't work and they don't work. As I said in my previous comment, the policies are only making things worse with zero data to back up any claim that the War on Terror is being won in any arena. Afghanistan is a mess, with as many or more terrorists there now than previously, and the Taliban in shadow-control of the majority of the country even while we are still occupying it. The US just also armed a branch of Al Qaeda in Syria - was that part of the plan in the War on Terror?Fortunately, Christie's comments drew a very strong slew of responses from Rand Paul, the first of which is below.

“If Gov. Christie believes the constitutional rights and the privacy of all Americans is ‘esoteric’, he either needs a new dictionary, or he needs to talk to more Americans, because a great number of them are concerned about the dramatic overreach of our government in recent years,” Doug Stafford, a senior adviser to Paul, said in a statement to POLITICO. “Defending America and fighting terrorism is the concern of all Americans, especially Sen. Paul. But it can and must be done in keeping with our Constitution and while protecting the freedoms that make America exceptional.”

Americans have to realize who is really terrorizing us - our own government. I personally am far more scared of having my personal information tracked and recorded by a faceless government spook who can label me a terrorist and detain me without trial indefinitely than I am in being attacked by a terrorist. I'll take the odds every time on that one. A sure bet is that our government is spying on my online activity, keeping a database of every call and conversation I have had, where I travel (via the police's new license plate scanners), and searching my car at the airport. A successful terrorist attack probably has odds around 1,000,000-1. I'm more likely to be struck by lightning or bitten by a shark. And I'm supposed to give up my freedom for that?
